Description
This series centers on the lost virtue of trust: the challenges of maintaining it, the consequences of its breach, and the potential for healing and reconciliation. We delve into the complexities of trust by examining real-life scenarios, engaging with scripture, and drawing from various perspectives. The goal of these lessons is to equip both leaders and students with the tools to navigate the complexities surrounding trust in a world where it’s often tested and betrayed. Students will emerge with a deeper understanding of trust and faith. They will also be empowered to cultivate greater trust in their relationships and communities.
Week 1- Trust and Bad Blood
If you have Swifties in your midst, they will surely love this lesson. This week is a brief overview of trust. Students will learn how culture tries to encourage us to be cynical rather than faithful and trusting. Using faith as their guide, they will explore the consequences of living without trust. Ultimately, they will learn how trust is at the center of faith and how God’s story is one of mending trust in our lives.
Scripture- Genesis 3:1-13
Week 2- Trust and God
This week’s lesson explores the profound connection between trusting God and prayerful relationship with God. Students will watch a gripping clip from the movie “Gravity,” where the character Ryan Stone turns to prayer in a life-threatening situation. Students are prompted to discuss why Ryan chose to pray and what may hinder her trust in God. Drawing from Jeremiah 29:11, we discover God’s invitation to trust, even in times of uncertainty and desperation. Students will be challenged to reflect on their own trust in God and engage in a creative activity. They will add verses to the spiritual song, “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands” to express their trust, hopes, and uncertainties in God’s care. This session encourages students to deepen their trust in God through prayer and reflection on life’s challenges.
Scripture- Jeremiah 29:4-11
Week 3- Trusting Others
In this week’s lesson, students will dive into the theme of broken trust. The goal is to explore the challenges of trust and betrayal in our personal and societal relationships using a thought-provoking narrative about broken trust. Students will then grapple with the complexities of trust, forgiveness, and reconciliation. They will engage in a reflective process, drawing upon scripture, theology, and real-life experiences to discern how to navigate broken trust in their own lives. Students and leaders will leave with a deeper appreciation of the role trust plays in their lives. They will also learn to approach broken trust with grace and a willingness to mend what is torn.
Scripture- Matthew 10:5-16
