Youth Ministry Course Descriptions:

Youth Minister as Pastor and Leader

  • Understanding the role of the youth minister in the life of the church, youth, and families

  • Pastoral Care and Counseling Teenagers

  • The role of relational youth ministry

Teaching the Gospel to Adolescents

  • Learn how to develop solid biblical and theological lessons using a variety of techniques and settings,

  • Develop a basic understanding of male and female adolescent development,

  • Understand how to program and work with Junior High youth, and

Developing Theological Models for Youth Ministry

  • Understand the history of youth ministry,

  • Study effective, cross-denominational models youth ministry in the church and parachurch,

  • Learn to think theologically about youth ministry programming, and

  • Develop a theological model for ministry within a specific context.

Advanced Studies on Youth, Culture, and the Church

  • Examine youth ministry through the lens of postmodern culture,

  • Examine the modern church and how it is shaping and being shaped by culture, and

  • Explore the latest studies in youth, culture, and religion

Core Seminary Coursework

Old Testament

An introduction to the literature, history, and methods of interpreting the Old Testament. The course intends to assist the student in appropriating the biblical texts for the practice of ministry.

New Testament

A study of the content and nature of the writings of the New Testament in their historical, cultural, literary, social, political, and canonical contexts in order to gain knowledge of the content and to gain skills in interpreting and appropriating biblical interpretations for modern life.

Church History

An introduction to the principal issues in the study of church history and a survey of church history from apostolic times to the present.

Christian Beliefs

An introduction to theology through a survey of the major beliefs of the Christian church, including the Trinity, Creation, Incarnation, and Redemption.

Students also earn 6 hours of youth ministry practicum credit and 2 hours for formation development for a total of 32 hours of credit that make up the Certificate in Youth Ministry program.
